Date: Aug 8, 2019

Location: Hamilton, ON, CA, L8N 3K7

Company: Bunge

Bunge Limited (, NYSE: BG) is a leading global agribusiness and food company operating in over 40 countries with approximately 32,000 employees. Bunge buys, sells, stores and transports oilseeds and grains to serve customers worldwide; processes oilseeds to make protein meal for animal feed; produces edible oil products for consumers and commercial customers in the food processing, industrial and artisanal bakery, confectionery, human nutrition and food service categories; produces sugar and ethanol from sugarcane; mills wheat, corn and rice to make ingredients used by food companies; and sells fertilizer in South America. Founded in 1818, the company is headquartered in White Plains, New York.

The main function of this position is quality control and grading of inbound seed and beans.  The main responsibility is to accurately establish grades, weights and dockage on canola and soybean deliveries to Bunge Canada, Hamilton, according to the Regulations and Policies of the Canadian Grain Commission and Bunge Canada.

Grading is the most important aspect of this position because the grade assigned by the Grain Grader establishes price paid for the load of grain.  This position is also responsible for maintaining a clean, safe work environment in the scale house office as well as on the grounds of the North Property Facility.

Normal hours of work are on a rotating 12-hour shift basis with day shift being 07:00 to 19:00, and night shift being 19:00 to 07:00.  The starting and quitting times may be altered as required for the efficient operation of the business.

Qualifications and Duties

  • Must be able to accurately grade and perform a dockage assessment on all deliveries of bean and seed in a timely fashion.
  • Must be able to use vacuum probes to obtain representative samples of grain from trucks.  Daily Probe Readings must be performed to ensure that the vacuum on the probe is calibrated.  Must inform the Material Handling Supervisor if maintenance is required.
  • Must be able to properly prepare samples for submission to a third party lab, and retain samples for grade and dockage.
  • Must have good customer service skills.  This position interacts with our Grain Suppliers, Truck Drivers, Material Handling Supervisor in Hamilton, and the Grain Schedulers in Oakville on a daily basis.
  • Must be able to accurately input data for truck deliveries into the One-Weigh software system in a timely fashion.  This also includes accurately completing the paperwork manually when the computer system is not functioning.
  • Must be able to work independently at the North end of our property with minimal supervision.  Since there is no direct supervision during the night shift, the Grain Grader must be able to solve any problems that arise.
  • Must be able to check all grain handling equipment and report any deficiencies or concerns.  This is an operational function, not a maintenance function.
  • Must complete EDI rail billing and switch requests on weekends and holidays prior to the rail company arriving at the plant to switch out our railcars in order to avoid delayed document and no-bill charges
  • Must present themselves in a respectable manner as a representative of Bunge Canada to all suppliers and truckers.  This includes their appearance, dress, and manner in which they deal with truck drivers.  All employees are required to wear clean, company-issued uniforms on each shift.
  • Prevent congestion by monitoring deliveries and properly directing trucks to either of the 2 unloading areas, and sending trucks to staging when necessary.  This includes ensuring that only 6 trucks are sent to the RTB unloading pit at one time in order to keep the trucks off Burlington Street, ensuring that trucks are unloaded in the same sequence that they were sampled, and ensuring that any breach of security is reported to the Material Handling Supervisor.
  • Must keep the North Property scale house office, the sample room under the scale house, and the surrounding grounds in a neat, clean, and safe working condition.
  • Store all Rail samples for 60 days and Truck samples for 30 days in the sample room under the scale house.  Remove any samples older than this.
  • Maintain proper housekeeping of the office, equipment, scale and sample room.  This includes cleaning the counters, and sweeping.  Additionally, mopping, taking out the garbage, and cleaning the bathroom and toilet on Fridays.
  • Scale checks are to be performed regularly.  The results are to be emailed to your supervisor.
  • Weigh trucks delivering chemicals to the plant and trucks removing scrap steel and biodegradable materials from the plant.  This position also notifies the Production Supervisor when the chemical trucks arrive so that the gates can be opened.
  • Prepare a composite sample of bean and seed received daily and deliver the sample to the Lab for quality testing.
  • E-mail both the Material Handling Supervisor and the Grain Scheduler with the number of trucks that were unloaded the day before.
  • Provide accurate written reports on any Incidents, Accidents, Fire or Spills as necessary, utilizing the “C-15 near Miss Reporting (EHS Data Entry Format)” sheet.
  • Comply with all Bunge Canada Corporate and Hamilton policies, including Safe Work Practices, Emergency Measures Plan, and the Health and Safety Act of Ontario.  Maintain Safety Standards in all areas of work.
  • Data entry into the EHS system when necessary
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Material Handling Supervisor.

This position is responsible for grading approximately 70-100 trucks daily throughout the year, with the exception of the Harvest period where they grade approximately 150-200 trucks daily.  Approximately 75% of the daily truck deliveries are graded by the Grain Grader on day shift, and 25% are graded by the Grain Grader on night shift.  In addition, this position is responsible for grading rail and vessel samples.
