The Global Director, Process Safety will advise the development, improvement, implementation, execution, and sustainment of Bunge’s Process Safety Management (PSM) and combustible dust programs in the company’s global operational footprint. Typical chemical processes covered by this position are oilseed extraction with hexane and other solvents, ammonia refrigeration, hydrogenation, and other chemical processes. Combustible dust processes involve the storage, handling and conveyance of organic grains, grain products, and their associated combustible dusts. This individual is globally responsible for driving continuous improvement and reduction in Serious Injury and Fatality exposures associated with hazardous chemicals and combustible dusts, across multiple partner groups, business lines, and geographic regions to achieves “One Bunge”.

Main priorities:

  • Lead and improve elements of the Bunge Global PSM and Combustible Dust Standards.
  • Develop, implement, and report important metrics and performance indicators including PHA and audit action item closure, while tracking the implementation and effectiveness of PSM programs on a routine basis.
  • Apply PSM metrics to identify and correct weaknesses in PSM management systems and operational discipline.
  • Partner with subject matter experts to produce best in class process safety and combustible dust performance plans.
  • Lead the Global Process Safety Management while developing a strategic improvement plan.
  • Nurture teamwork and alignment with other working groups within the organization, including the maintenance (AAROP), refinery, oilseed crushing, and dust handling businesses(Milling Grain Operations).
  • Incorporate Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) principles and practices.
  • Build capability to address safety risk through Design (PtD) and Inherently Safer Design (ISD) on facility builds and modifications.
  • Identification, coaching, and development of Process Safety talent.
  • Evaluate efficiency of existing programs and make recommendations to improve process safety
  • Coordinate and or lead incident investigations on severe events.
  • Offer global and transparent leadership to Bunge’s Environmental, Health, Safety, and Quality programs.
  • Visit facility sites and teams, globally to build positive relationships and increase collaboration among working teams.

Essential Functions:

  • Define and communicate process and combustible safety standards and practices.
  • Stay engaged with the latest process safety trends, standard methodologies including SIF prevention, and understand how to translate into effective actions in Bunge operations.
  • Willingness to challenge the status quo to improve Bunge’s risk profile.
  • Perform frequent data analysis on Process Safety Measures.
  • Be prepared to actively participate, lead, or support serious incident investigation process. Either remotely or through short notice travel.
  • Lead or participate on audit teams for operational sites to connect with plant floor employees and leaders.
  • Provide feedback on safety of operations and construction activities related to major capital projects (~$3Billion next few years).
  • Provide recommendations on prevention of loss of life and life-altering injuries, solutions to audit findings, CAPEX expenditures (priceless – this is a core value for Bunge).

  • Project management and implementation/execution skills.
  • Engineering problem solving skills.
  • Ability to engage with other employees at a more strategic level to articulate Bunge’s safety vision and priorities.
  • 25-50% global travel required, which may include occasional weekends.
  • Strategic and Influence proficiencies to lead and engage multiple levels of the organization.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Occupational/Industrial Safety, and or related education.
  • 15 years of dynamic leadership in Process Safety, Operations, and or corporate safety program administration.
  • Shown experience influencing people, plants, and peers and working across matrix organizations.
  • Professional Certification in Process Safety (CCPSC) and or Occupational Safety (ASP, CSP, GSP, SMS).
  • Preferred graduate level education in Engineering, Business, and or Industrial Safety.
