Innovation Director EMEA

Joining Bunge as Director of Innovation for EMEA, means leading all research and development efforts and team members within Bunge Loders Croklaan’s (BLC’s) EMEA business unit focusing on fats and oils. As a member of the regional Management Team, you help craft and implement business strategy and make meaningful business decisions related to regional strategy, financial performance and managing supply to our customers! Together with a magnificent team of around 60 innovation professionals, you build a customer- and market-focused innovation pipeline that is aligned with business targets and delivers measurable financial growth. EMEA innovation resources are to be invested in the highest priority projects for both customers and longer-term innovation projects.

Nurturing the impactful team of Technical Services, Applications, and Research professionals across multiple EMEA locations is the key priority of this role. A continuous focus is on building a successful team through hiring, performance management, priority setting based on Integrated Business Planning process. Career development and engagement drive will set the direction of the team and will help foster and align to our global “One Bunge” culture.

Other Accountabilities


  • Deliver incremental margin growth for Bunge Loders Croklaan EMEA through the execution of short- and long-term, customer- and market-driven fats & oils innovation projects aligned to business goals; set and track critical metrics
  • Serve as the representative on the Bunge Innovation Council and on (Stage Gate) gate review teams for relevant long-term innovation projects; communicate and collaborate closely across teams
  • Align with peers across Bunge to share innovation resources and processes and staff long-term global projects

This role is aligned to our office in Zaandam and can be partially performed hybrid/remotely. Expected travel is around 25% to customers, exhibitions/events and team.

Who we are looking for

This role requires a strong people and business leader who is fully at home in the world of food innovation. As, next to our people, our customers are priority, there will be much interaction with our customers’ senior R&D and Supply Chain colleagues. Therefore, bring your Technical leadership, Business & Customer partnership and an excellent, solid understanding of, and a network within the EMEA food manufacturing industry.

Other requirements


  • MS in Food Science, Chemistry, Engineering, or related field; PhD preferred
  • Minimum 15 years in food ingredients R&D, 10 years in people management; fats & oils expertise strongly preferred
  • Experience leading multi-disciplinary teams across multiple locations and cultures in a global, matrixed organization
  • Experience with Stage Gate portfolio and project management,, and other portfolio tools
  • Proven track record of setting long term objectives and strategy and driving financial growth by delivering innovation projects, tracking progress through critical metrics
  • Strong team leadership and ability to identify and develop key talent
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English, other European languages are helpful
