This level typically involves handling the most challenging technical issues and driving significant infrastructure projects.

Overview:

The Data Center Server & Storage Specialist is a recognized subject matter expert responsible for the advanced engineering, implementation, and highest-level support of the organization's enterprise-wide server and storage infrastructure within its data centers. This role requires an unparalleled understanding of complex server and storage technologies, their interdependencies, and their strategic alignment with business objectives. The Specialist will lead critical infrastructure projects, define technical standards, troubleshoot the most challenging incidents, drive automation initiatives, and provide expert guidance to other technical teams and leadership. This position is crucial for ensuring the scalability, resilience, performance, and security of core IT services. 

Main Accountabilities: 

• Lead the design and evolution of highly available, scalable, and secure server and storage solutions aligned with business requirements and future growth. 

• Evaluate emerging technologies and industry trends (e.g., hybrid cloud, software-defined storage, hyper-converged infrastructure, advanced automation) to recommend strategic adoption. 

• Develop and maintain technical roadmaps for server and storage infrastructure. 

• Define and enforce technical standards, best practices, and governance policies for server and storage environments. 

• Serve as the highest escalation point for complex technical issues related to server operating systems (Windows Server, Linux/UNIX, container platforms) and enterprise storage systems (SAN, NAS, object storage). 

• Perform advanced configuration, optimization, and performance tuning of critical server and storage infrastructure. 

• Lead major upgrades, migrations, and consolidation efforts for server and storage platforms. 

• Design and implement advanced automation solutions for routine tasks, provisioning, and configuration management using scripting and orchestration tools. 

• Proactively analyze system performance metrics, conduct in-depth trend analysis, and predict future capacity needs using advanced forecasting models. 

• Identify and resolve systemic performance bottlenecks and resource contention issues across the server and storage landscape. 

• Design and implement high-availability and disaster recovery solutions, including replication, clustering, and site recovery strategies, ensuring RTO/RPO objectives are met. 

• Lead regular disaster recovery testing and provide expert recommendations for improvement. 

• Implement and enforce advanced security measures, access controls, and encryption strategies for server and storage data. 

• Conduct security hardening, vulnerability assessments, and remediation activities at an expert level. 

• Ensure strict adherence to internal security policies, industry regulations, and compliance frameworks (e.g., ISO 27001, GDPR, HIPAA). 

• Lead large-scale, complex infrastructure projects from conception to completion, managing technical scope, timelines, and deliverables. 

• Provide expert technical leadership, guidance, and mentorship to senior analysts, specialists, and other team members. 

• Develop comprehensive and high-quality technical documentation, including architectural diagrams, detailed design documents, standard operating procedures, and knowledge base articles. 

• Act as a technical liaison between IT infrastructure and other departments, vendors, and external partners. 

• Engage directly with key technology vendors to influence product roadmaps, evaluate new features, and resolve critical support issues. 

• Stay abreast of the latest industry innovations, research new products, and conduct proof-of-concept evaluations to determine applicability to the organization's environment. 

Knowledge and Technical Competencies: 

• Operating Systems: Deep expertise in Windows Server (AD, DNS, GPO, PowerShell) and/or multiple enterprise-grade Linux distributions (e.g., RHEL, SLES, CentOS). 

• Virtualization & Containerization: Expert knowledge of VMware vSphere (ESXi, vCenter, SRM, vSAN) and/or Microsoft Hyper-V, including advanced features and troubleshooting. Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, or other container orchestration technologies. 

• Storage Technologies: Master-level understanding and hands-on experience with multiple enterprise-class SAN (Fibre Channel, iSCSI), NAS, and object storage platforms from leading vendors (e.g., Dell EMC PowerMax/Unity/Isilon, NetApp ONTAP, Pure Storage, HPE 3PAR/Nimble, IBM FlashSystem). Knowledge of software-defined storage (SDS) and storage replication technologies. 

• Backup & Recovery: Extensive experience designing and managing enterprise backup solutions (e.g., Veeam, Commvault, Rubrik, Cohesity) and advanced data protection strategies. 

• Automation & Scripting: Highly proficient in scripting languages (e.g., PowerShell, Python, Bash) for complex automation, API integration, and infrastructure as code (IaC) principles. 

• Networking: Advanced understanding of networking principles relevant to data center infrastructure (TCP/IP, routing, switching, VLANs, Firewalls, load balancing, Fibre Channel zoning/VSANs). 

• Cloud Integration: Significant experience with server and storage services in public cloud platforms (e.g., Azure, AWS, GCP) and developing hybrid cloud strategies. 

• Monitoring & Logging: Expertise with enterprise monitoring tools (e.g., Splunk, ELK Stack, Prometheus, Grafana, SolarWinds) for performance analysis and anomaly detection. 

Soft skills: 

• Deep understanding of data center technologies, including servers, storage, networking, virtualization, and cloud computing. 

• Expertise in data center design, implementation, and operations. 

• Strong knowledge of IT security best practices and regulatory compliance requirements. 

• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. 

• Exceptional communication, interpersonal, leadership, and presentation skills. 

Education/Experience:  

• Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field. 

• Experience: Typically 10+ years of progressive experience in IT infrastructure, with at least 7-8 years specifically focused on senior-level server and storage administration, engineering, or architecture in a large-scale enterprise data center environment. 

• VMware Certified Advanced Professional (VCAP) or VMware Certified Design Expert (VCDX) (desired). 

• Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert, or equivalent in other cloud platforms (desired). 

• Multiple advanced vendor-specific storage certifications (e.g., Dell EMC Expert, NetApp Certified Implementation Engineer) (desired). 

• ITIL Expert or higher (desired). 

• Relevant security certifications (e.g., CISSP, CCSP) (desired).
