The EMEA Process Safety Manager will direct and support the development, improvement, implementation, execution, and sustainment of Bunge’s Global Process Safety (GPS) and combustible dust programs in the Bunge’s EMEA operational footprint. Typical chemical processes covered by this position are oilseed extraction with hexane and other solvents, ammonia refrigeration, hydrogenation, and other chemical processes.  Combustible dust processes involve the storage, handling and conveyance of organic grains, grain products, and their associated combustible dusts.  This individual is regionally responsible for driving continuous improvement and reduction in Serious Injury and Fatality exposures associated with hazardous chemicals and combustible dusts, across multiple stakeholder groups, business lines, and geographic regions to achieves “One Bunge”.  Reports to the EMEA Safety Director.

 

 

The main priorities of the position:

 

  • Manage and implement of the Bunge Global Process Safety (GPS) and Combustible Dust Standards
  • Provide appropriate feedback and check mechanisms to assure programs are functioning and reducing catastrophic incident risks
  • Partner with Technology-CoE’s (subject matter experts) to produce best in class process safety and combustible dust performance plans
  • Enhance organizational visibility and sensitivity to catastrophic incident risks
  • Participate in the Global Process Safety working group comprised of global experts and stakeholders
  • Influence key decision makers in promoting Process Safety in all levels of the organization
  • Incorporate Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) principles and practices in the Process Safety and Combustible Dust programs
  • Develop an EMEA strategic improvement plan for GPS and Combustible Dust
  • Participate in external organizations associated with Combustible Dust and Process Safety
  • Engage with external stakeholders (insurance, regulatory bodies, trade organizations) to address deficiencies and potential innovations
  • Build capability to address Process Safety and Combustible Dust safety risks through…. Inherently Safer Design (ISD) on facility builds and modifications
  • Coach direct reports and internal stakeholders in Process Safety excellence and operational discipline principles
  • Create proactive Process Safety actions during periods of organizational change.
  • Evaluate efficiency of existing programs and make recommendations to reduce waste
  • Coordinate and or lead incident investigations on Process Safety and Combustible Dust severe events
  • Foster collaboration and alignment with other working groups within the organization, including the maintenance (ARROP), refinery, oilseed crushing, and dust handling businesses (Milling Grain Operations). This entails actively engaging with multiple working groups to ensure a unified approach to process safety across different areas of operations. Establish strong lines of communication, promote the exchange of best practices, share relevant information, and coordinate efforts to enhance process safety standards throughout the organization
  • Utilize Process Safety metrics to identify and correct weaknesses in Process Safety management systems and operational discipline

 

 

Functions:

 

  • Participate in the definition and communicate process safety- and combustible safety standards and practices
  • Stay engaged with the latest process safety trends, best practices including SIF prevention, and understand how to translate into effective actions in Bunge operations
  • Drive human and organizational performance (HOP) and critical risk management by incorporating the principals into Bunge Process Safety culture
  • Active participation of the Global Process Safety working group and EMEA Safety Working Group
  • Identification, coaching, and development of Process Safety talent
  • Willingness to challenge the status quo to improve Bunge’s risk profile
  • Perform frequent data analysis to determine Process Safety and Combustible dust risk trends
  • Be prepared to actively participate, lead, or support serious incident investigation process.  Either remotely or through short notice travel.
  • Lead or participate on audit teams for operational sites to connect with plant floor employees and leaders
  • Offer regional and visible leadership to Bunge’s Environmental, Health, Safety and Quality programs
  • Provide input on (process) safety of operations and commissioning activities related to major capital projects
  • Provide input on prevention of loss of life and life-altering injuries, solutions to audit findings, CAPEX expenditures

 

 

Key Relationships & Stakeholders:

 

  • Process Safety Working Group – Ensure group is focused on the most pertinent process safety risks and that actions are being communicated and executed in the business
  • Technology Working Groups – Ensure technical SME teams are engaged in Process and Combustible Dust Safety
  • Industrial Directors – Report progress, discuss challenges and allocate resources
  • EMEA Safety Director – Report progress, discuss challenges and forecast future
  • Capital Project Management Teams- Engage in project builds to advocate for Prevention Through Design/Inherently Safer Design solutions
  • Site Managers – Couching and supporting for Process Safety issues
  • Corporate Insurance Team-Ensure that insurable risks are being addressed in the context of the Process and Combustible Dust safety programs

 

 

Competencies / Skills / Knowledge:

 

  • Strong knowledge of process safety principles, methodologies, and regulations (e.g., HAZOP, LOPA, Bowtie, Seveso, ATEX, OSHA PSM).
  • Project management and implementation/execution skills
  • Engineering problem solving skills
  • Ability to engage with other employees at a more strategic level to articulate Bunge’s safety vision and priorities.
  • Fluency in English
  • 25-50% Europe travel required, which may include occasional weekends away.
  • Frequent interaction through video conferences, including some outside of core hours
  • Demonstrated influential leadership capabilities to lead and engage multiple levels of the organization
  • External relationships in Process and Combustible Dust safety for expertise
  • Ability to defend difficult / unpopular decisions with data, facts and RAGAGEPs

 

 

Education & Experience:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Environmental science, Industrial Safety, and or related education
  • Advanced degree or professional certifications (e.g. Nebosh-PSM, CCPSC, SAChE) preferred
  • 10 years of progressive leadership in Process Safety, Operations, and or corporate safety program administration
  • Proven experience influencing people, plants, and peers and working across matrix organizations
  • Preferred graduate level education in Engineering, Business, and or Industrial Safety
