The Senior Legal Counsel will be responsible for providing compliance support regarding regulations relevant to the operations and conduct of Bunge’s business globally. While the primary focus is on economic sanctions, the scope also includes anti-money laundering (AML), anti-boycott, and anti-corruption.
Based in Barcelona, Spain, this position will report to the Associate General Counsel, Global Trade & Supply Chain. The role requires providing decision-making support and advice to the business regarding "grey areas" where there is no clear legal violation but associated reputational or sanctions risk exists. The goal is to make procedures and tools targeted and effective so that risk is identified without unduly overburdening the business.
Principal Accountabilities:

Oversight of Screening and Due Diligence:
- Oversee the conducting of KYC diligence for sanctioned jurisdictions and other sensitive areas.
- Oversee screening for trade finance activities of Bunge Financial Services (BFS), including counterparty due diligence review and vessel screening.
- Conduct risk assessments on counterparties related to sanctions, money laundering, corruption, fraud, or other concerns.
- Handle sanctions inquiries, calls, and questionnaires from banks, counterparties, and insurers, including resolving queries regarding stopped payments.

Policy Development & Regulatory Updates:
- Assist the Associate General Counsel with the development and maintenance of Know Your Customer (KYC) procedures.
- Update Bunge economic sanctions guidance policies and draft memoranda for local counsel.
- Develop checklists for compliance-related procedures and screening requirements.
- Provide email updates to relevant Bunge personnel regarding recent changes to OFAC (Department of the Treasury) and BIS (Department of Commerce) sanctions and controls.

Research, Licensing & Training:
- Conduct research regarding non-U.S. local sanctions.
- Assist in the preparation of OFAC and/or BIS license applications, reports, or notifications as required.
- Assist with Anti-Money Laundering policies, guidance, and training documents.
- Assist with training various groups at Bunge entities globally.
- Assist with training and due diligence regarding acquisitions and joint ventures.

Systems & Contracts:
- Assist IT development efforts to improve the sanctions compliance program.
- Conduct reviews of compliance-related provisions in contracts and agreements.
- Oversee the maintenance of compliance files.
Competencies, Skills & Experience:
Education:
- Law degree.
Experience:
- Must be a qualified attorney in good standing.
- At least five (5) years of experience practicing law.
- The majority of experience must be in a compliance-focused role specifically relevant to economic sanctions, export controls, anti-boycott, and OFAC regulations.
Skills & Knowledge:
- Must be an accessible, responsive attorney with superior written and oral communication skills.
- Strong commitment to teamwork.
- Ability to analyze complex issues with a view to providing clear and concise guidance to the business.
