Position Summary

The Technical Service Representative (TSR) provides technical leadership covering Bunge Loders Croklaan’s (BLC) line of shortening, margarine, oil and specialty ingredients used by our Food & Ingredient and Foodservice customers.  The TSR serves as the front line of technical support to the customer, complementing our Sales team’s efforts to drive purchase decisions by proactively making effective product/ingredient(s) recommendations, giving impactful presentations on technical topics, solving processing and application challenges.  The Technical Service Representative is responsible for helping grow product/ingredients sales through identification of cross-selling, upselling as well as new opportunities based on a deep knowledge of our customers’ business, applications, connecting customers’ needs with BLC’s range of product solutions.

 

Core Functions

Acts as primary technical contact with our customers to align customer needs with broader BLC company capabilities and goals through:

Commercial Engagement

    Plays an active role in key customer visits (in person or virtually) with or in coordination with sales team to help identify needs that can be met with BLC product solutions.  Builds network and owns the relations with customers’ product development, R&D and quality teams to develop deep understanding of our customers’ innovation pipelines and strategy, product lines, quality requirements, production capabilities/limitations, business strategy, and market trends of focus.
    Develops slide decks and presents on a variety of topics including existing BLC product lines, new product offerings and general fats and oils training to deliver clear and compelling value propositions that help drive and generate meaningful opportunities, accelerate the speed in which BLC and our customers co-develop solutions, bringing them to market faster for mutual benefit.  As needed, based on clear ROI, enhance our customers’ technical knowledge and understanding of our products/ingredients are best used in their applications or production facilities.  Promotes new technologies and new product launches with the customer.
    Combines understanding of the functional role that our ingredients play in each unique system and knowledge of the BLC product line in order to make accurate product recommendations to meet the functionality needed in the customers’ applications.  Provides timely response to customer questions.
    Partners with commercial team to identify and implement selling strategies and tactics in order to help balance demand of different oils types, promote new product development and defend existing business. 

Tracking Customer Insights

    Seeks and tracks customer feedback and insights to broader R&D team to help ensure new product research efforts are in alignment with marketplace needs.  Helps ensure a continuous, robust project pipeline is always under development.  
    Independently monitors customer trends, keeps track of competitor capabilities, and recommends new product development projects to help maintain BLC’s competitive edge.  Shares insights with the broader commercial team to help guide capability enhancements.
    Conscientiously maintains customer visit reports to share key insights with the broader BLC team and record learnings for future reference.

Troubleshooting and Test Support

    Capable of working in our customers’ manufacturing sites, restaurants and test kitchens to troubleshoot issues that arise.  Demonstrates combined knowledge of BLC products and our customers’ applications to find solutions.  Works with customer and broader BLC R&D and Operations teams to implement them.  
    Travels to be onsite for customer tests and start-ups as requested.  Comfortable leading tests in both a manufacturing environment monitoring a plant test or a restaurant environment supporting a fry test. 

Tradeshows and Meetings

    Actively participates in industry tradeshows and meetings where BLC customers are in attendance in order to represent BLC, maintain contacts, bring back trend information and build competitive intelligence.

 

Skills/Experience Requirements:

    Bachelors or Master’s degree in Food Science or Bakery Science is preferred or other scientific or engineering studies like Food Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, etc. 
    12 plus years of experience in the Food Ingredients, CPG or Restaurant industries in Product Development or Technical Services type roles, particularly those involving customer facing experience or equivalent education.
    Experience learning and applying Ingredient Functionality to multiple applications including Bakery, Confectionary and Frying
    Possess an outgoing, energetic and consistently enthusiastic approach to customer engagement   
    Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate technical knowledge of product applications to large and small groups and tailor conversation to all levels of BLC and our customers organizations.  
    Comfortable developing slide shows in PowerPoint on technical subjects for both external and internal audiences; as well as working Microsoft Excel & Word to create tables, reports, other documents and Salesforce.com to track and maintain projects and customer engagements. 
    Takes an entrepreneurial approach and is motivated to create opportunities and provide solutions for our customers that drive sales
    Able to juggle multiple priorities while maintaining clear and crisp communication and updates on active projects
    Diligent and timely responding to customer questions, writing reports and demonstrates overall good prioritization and time management skills.  
    Ability to travel 50 - 70% of workdays
