The Safety, Health and Environmental Manager works with facility management and employees to eliminate risks and injuries in the workplace.  This position serves as the staff specialist in all safety, environmental, and health matters.  This leader understands modern safety and environmental improvement techniques and methods, behavioral based safety theories and applications and works with plant leadership to creatively motivate others to improve their personal leadership style and effectiveness.  This leader provides support by developing and carrying out procedures that effectively control and reduce injury and health exposures in the workplace.  This position also ensures compliance with all federal and state safety, health and environmental requirements.

This leader works with the staff and with other Bunge facilities to understand and identify continuous improvement opportunities in safety and then to put together plant safety improvement plans.  This leader will also aid and support the organization and individual managers in their pursuit of meeting their safety improvement goals.  The position is a partner of the operations leads and acts as an independent voice to monitor safety and environmental performance.

 

Essential Functions

  • Provide facilitation and leadership to site safety & health committees, work groups and functions.  Large amount of time is spent working with plant safety leadership and participants to cause employee empowerment and ownership of site safety activities.
  • Prioritize High Potential Exposures at the site, with focus on education of all site personnel in identifying and managing High Potential Exposures.
  • Work with leaders to plan, direct and implement safety, environmental and wellness programs to ensure a safe, healthy and zero-incident work environment
  • Support line management on their personal safety leadership style and improvement effectiveness
  • Evaluate site implementation and compliance with Bunge and regulatory safety policies and procedures to ensure effectiveness, recommend improvements and lead improvements
  • Evaluate site implementation and compliance with Bunge and regulatory environmental policies and procedures to ensure effectiveness, recommend improvements and lead improvements
  • Understand Bunge policy and government regulation and effectively interpret, communicate, and implement such in the workplace
  • Establish goals for proactive safety and environmental performance metrics and track, measure, trend, and interpret results
  • Develop and implement programs to train managers and employees in work site safety practices with focus on high potential employee exposures
  • Assist in and provide oversight in development and execution of annual site safety plans and implementation of items contained therein
  • Track injuries and equipment damage events, conduct investigations and lead efforts to prevent recurrence of incidents, including root cause analysis investigations
  • Develop policies and procedures to reduce or eliminate exposures and injuries
  • Provide inspiration, creativity and new approaches to safety leadership so as to inspire leaders and employees to possess and demonstrate a passion towards safety
  • Demonstrate an strong sense of urgency for resolution when confronted with safety risks through proper priority setting and effective communication and action
  • Act as the operations safety expert in evaluating new project designs and plant modifications
  • Support the Loss Prevention Control inspection process, with emphasis on fire prevention and fire protection equipment
  • Conduct audits at the plant level for safety and environmental compliance
  • Represent the organization in community or industry groups and programs
  • Provide care for injured employees.  Site liaison for workers compensation third party administrator.
  • Spend  up to 60 percent of time in the work areas engaging employees, coaching leaders, and evaluating/addressing risks or incidents  The remainder of time is spent in an office performing administrative and planning functions
  • Additional projects and duties as assigned

 

Skills/Experience:

  • A passion for safety and improving safety culture
  • Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Safety or related field preferred
  • Minimum five years experience in plant operations in a leadership role (manager or supervisor). 
  • Demonstrated success in the application of safety standards and compliance with safety regulations.  At least 3 years in a safety leadership role is preferred
  • Leadership skills are an important pre-requisite for this position.  This person must be an accomplished, engaging people leader that leads with both confidence and care
  • Superior communication skills in dealing with all levels of staff, including hourly workforce and site management.  Leadership ability to influence upward, with peers and the entire workforce
  • Very good organizational skills is a must so as to constantly keep in touch with all employees and management at the sites
  • Demonstrated ability to be inspirational and creative
