Senior Research Analyst - Veg Oils

This role will be leading and responsible for all aspects of palm oil research including outlook, timely and relevant deliverables and forecasting of key supply and demand development for world prices. This market is fundamental in being able to assess global vegetable oil price evolution and to appropriately identify risk around vegetable oil positioning.


In addition to this core function, the candidate is also expected to embrace a more global role which includes coordinating global canola / rapeseed research, monitor global vegetable oil demand and flows to Asian and north African markets from all origins, and assist the Global Vegetable Oils Director in its function.

Main Accountabilities


  • In charge of keeping origins’ Palm oil SnD up to date, including forecast of short/long term production, food/industrial/biofuel demand adjustments in both domestic and international markets reflecting realities (price/policies/currencies, etc), tracking of all relevant statistics (MPOB, lineups, prices, etc) and alignment with research teams at all destinations. Actively seek adjustment of commercial outlook with SNDs and challenge thinking. Monitor all vegetable oils flows / demand to Asian and north African destinations.
  • Effectively communicate and synthesize weekly key supply and demand changes and flags to economic research teammates as well as commercial teams to help each stakeholder understand what changed and relevant swing factors.
  • Work closely with the vegetable oil value chain team both locally and internationally, leading discussions around palm oil economics, contributing to framing commercial strategies and identify flags and market functions in order to manage position risk.
  • Work closely with research colleagues across the world in framing various aspects of the vegetable oil market, stay actively connected on changes and flags.
  • Manage both India and Indonesia research teams, to continue the delivery of strong analytics on their local markets as well as grow a strong team.
  • Assist the existing regional team (EU / China / Canada) covering canola / rapeseed by monitoring trade flows to destinations outside their focus areas, act as liaison with Australia and the global canola group (including research.
  • Contribute improving current data analytics and processes, in particular the palm element of it, develop new knowledge and create new models and approaches where needed.

Job Requirement 


  • Minimum of a Master degree in Science / Economics / Engineering or any other related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in agricultural market economic research, preferably palm, including some working closely with commercial teams in designing trading opportunities and strategies.
  • Excellent mastering of English both written and oral.
  • Ability to speak Bahasa Melayu is preferred.
  • Experience in conducting field surveys, collecting field observations and curating data is also expected.
  • Strong statistical and analytical skills, including understanding of data management and best practices when approaching data analytics.
  • Good mastering of Excel, some level of expertise in using BI tools (Tableau) and/or programming language (Python) for analytics.
  • Critical thinking: must be able to look at trends, data, and numbers to draw conclusions based on the findings and write reports.
  • Detail oriented and organized for grid maintenance; vigilant in analysis to come to correct analysis/assumptions.
  • Solid people management experience to lead a cross-cultural and remote team
  • Able to demonstrate self-starter competencies, such showing initiative and being proactive in identifying problems and solving them.
